El Matador

Madrid, Spain is along with Barcelona the country’s most visited city. The Spanish capital has a lot to offer. It is home to Real Madrid CF, one of the biggest and most decorated football teams in Europe and the whole world. The Santiago Bernabeu is where the team plays its home games and it’s considered one of the most stunning stadiums around the globe.

The football season starts in August and ends in May so if you’re there during that time of the year make sure to book a football match. They usually play twice a week on most weeks except during international breaks. Real Madrid are current holders of the domestic league and have also won the Champions League which is Europe’s most prestigious cup competition for the 2nd year in a row. This accomplishment makes them the first team to win it back-to-back ever since the competition got its new name.

The team has some of the world’s finest players of course including current Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo. The ballon d’or is awarded to the best football player of a single year and is usually given to the Champions League winners’ best player. The team’s captain Sergio Ramos, a defender, is also an icon in Spanish football and captain of the Spanish National Team.

The city has a bunch of great museums and art galleries including Museo del Prado, Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen Bornemisza. Madrid’s CaixaForum is also a place you can contemplate beauty. Madrid also has an amazing skyline and a great place you can observe it is on the rooftop terrace of Circulo de Bellas Artes. From this location you can see the whole city from above and admire the wonderful skyline.

Madrid has great parks as well if you’re looking for a nice walk out in the sun. The biggest is Casa de Campo which is 6.6 sq mi. If you don’t realize how big that is, it’s basically 5 times the size of NY’s Central Park. The inside of the park also has a lake with small boats where kayaking schools practice for competitions.

You can visit El Rastro which is similar to Barcelona’s La Rambla (if you’re familiar with it). It’s a street where people set up shops to sell jewelry, accessories, and more. It’s a great place to go treasure hunting but can be a bit crowded so it’s best to go as early as possible in the day.
