Rhodes, Greece, Beautiful Island

As if you were walking back in time Rhodes brings upon an idea of being right back in 407 BC during its original construction. Rhodes, with its haunting landscape, rolling hills and a rather intriguing mix of the traditional and modern mix. It makes for a destination that history buffs and for those are looking for a little excitement and definite travel stop.

A little back story

Formally Rhodes, was not named as such, it was called “Collosus”. Why is that do you ask? Sir John Mandeville, gave it that name when during his travels up the Mediterranean and seeing the large status of Collosus ( he was the Greek Titan God of the Sun, Helios ), what other names could you give such a place. Rhodes did not acquire its identity until 332 when it became part of the growing legion of Alexander the Great. It was not until his death many years later that it became what it is today. Rhodes became a maritime city, as one of the largest ports in the Eastern Mediterranean after facing a major problem of rats which is where much wealth was transferred to the hands of the people for providing rodent control to the elites. This long and rich history makes Rhodians some of the proudest people in the region.

Wonders of the world- The Colosseum of Rome in Italy

There are some places in history that go beyond imagination by any standards of current times and the Colosseum of Rome in Italy is one such structure. This mammoth structure was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in AD 79 and completed by his son and heir Titus in AD 80. Almost 20 centuries ago this gigantic structure was built for recreational purposes however, the recreation was only of the spectators as during the period of festivities and games thousands of animals and gladiators were slain in this amphitheater.

The design

The Colosseum of Rome in Italy was built on a practical design of holding more than 55000 people as spectators coming to witness the fights. It had 80 gates and the seating arrangements were according to the stature of the spectators. It had an underground complex where the wild animals and the gladiators going to fight were caged. It was one of the most fearsome arenas in Rome. The outer structure had multiple layers of arches, three to be precise,  and they were covered with travertine and marble statues. The colosseum’s interior had been divided into three parts, namely the arena, cavea, and the podium. The wooden flooring of the arena was covered with sand so that the blood of the gladiators and the animals didn’t make it slippery for the fighters.

The animals could be lifted through 80 winch operated lifts and hence there was no question of delay in the entertainment of the spectators of the bloody fights. (more…)

The Beginning

In most situations, the fact of love is so alien to most that you can never believe that those feelings are mutual. Granted, we use the word every single day. I love this sweater, these shoes, I love them so much, and I love that restaurant. In hindsight, you probably do, and you use the word to express your unedited feeling for those things or that place.
